BULLHEADS WIN HOME OPENER
- The Searles Bullheads over 35 baseball team won their home opener
on Wednesday evening, defeating the St. Peter Saints by a score of
9-5. After winning three earlier road games, Bullheads are now 4-0
for the season, their best start since 2012, when they also started
began with a bang by scoring six runs in the bottom of the first
inning, despite having two runners forced out at home plate. Nate
Gusso and Troy Kamm each singled, with Kamm putting up the first run
on the new Searles Ballpark scoreboard on Pat Portner's bases loaded
walk. Aaron Wilfahrt and Josh Brudelie had RBI singles, sandwiched
around two St. Peter fielding errors.
Peter scored all five of their runs in the top of the second on
three hits, two base on balls, and two Searles errors. The key hit
in the inning was a two RBI single by the Saints Jeff Baron.
Schmitz pitched the complete game victory for the Bullheads by
shutting the door on St. Peter the rest of the game. Schmitz allowed
just one more hit in the third inning and a base on balls in the
4th, retiring the final ten batters that he faced. For the game,
Schmitz gave up the five runs on five hits, walked three and struck
Bullheads added single runs in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings. In the
3rd Wilfahrt doubled, went to third on an infield out, and scored on
Brudelie's sac fly to center field. In the 4th Tommy Glaser singled,
advanced on a groundout, and scored on Myke Hubbard's single. In the
5th Gusso scored on Corey Schaefer's hit.
multiple hits in the Bullheads' 13 hit attack were Gusso 2 for 3,
Kamm 3 for 4, Schaefer 2 for 2 with two walks, and Wilfarht 2 for 3.
Defensively Searles played errorless ball after the second inning
with center fielder Kamm making several outstanding catches.
